The Voice

Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”.”. — Genesis 3:1

The third chapter of the Bible introduces a different voice to the created world. A dangerous enemy comes to sow seeds of doubt and temptation. And now God and humanity no longer live in perfect fellowship. Perhaps you know the struggle that occurs when doubts and temptations enter in. Perhaps you are facing temptations right now, wondering, as Adam and Eve did, "Did God say . . .?" Maybe you know the guilt and shame that can make you hide from God and others.

The voice of temptation promises new knowledge and power. This newness is "pleasing to the eye" and "desirable." But sin is unable to deliver what we need most. We greedily pursue new wealth but discover that our wants are never satisfied. We lust after ungodly relationships and destroy the relationships that are most precious to us. Yes! The curse of sin is real, so is the mercy and promise of God Genesis 3:15. God's voice is firm and truthful in addressing the waywardness of humanity. In effect, he still says to us, "Have you done what I commanded you not to do?"

God asked this question in the same way parents ask their disobedient child to explain an incident. He already knows the truth, but the question gives the child an opportunity to confess and do the right thing. Jesus said, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27). Only the Lord’s true sheep follow and obey Him because they know and recognize His voice.

PRAYER

Lord, help me not to give in to the seduction of the strange voice. Let me hear your voice and know the truth. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
