The unnamed Woman
“Wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.” —Mark 14:9.
Along the road he traveled to the cross, Jesus met a woman who did “a beautiful thing.” Her anointing of Jesus was so important that he said her story would be proclaimed “throughout the world.” We aren’t told her name, but her actions do become famous. This unnamed woman repositioned herself for such service unto the Lord; she willingly offered herself to serve Jesus. This unnamed woman didn’t look to the disciples and ask their opinion of what she did. We should rise above such idle dependence upon man’s opinion; what matters is the Lord’s opinion. The beauty of an act we do for God is reflected in the fact of how and why we do it; Proverbs 16:2 – “All the ways of a man are clean in his sight, But the Lord weighs the motives”. We can do great things mumbling and complaining, but God will not call it beautiful. Not everyone liked what she did, however. “Why this waste of perfume?” they exclaimed. Why pour over the head of Jesus a costly jar of ointment so that it is gone in a minute? They were convinced that this affectionate gift was misdirected. The perfume could have been sold and the money given to the poor. But Jesus said the woman did a remarkable act. She perceived what no one else had imagined: the Messiah would soon suffer and she used the perfume to prepare him for burial.
The Lord wants us to be used. Yes! but what he is really after is that we pour all we have of ourselves to Him. Therefore, the question is not one of working for Him, but of being of service to Him willingly, always giving Him the first place of priority in our hearts and lives, as we pour out our affection to him and offer him our stored-up treasures as an act of worship. Let’s make memories that count.

PRAYER
Lord, you are worth more than all my love and devotion. May my life be in tune with all you have done for me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
