The First Example

He committed all the sins his father had done before him; his heart was not fully devoted to the Lord his God, as the heart of David his forefather had been. — 1 Kings 15:3

The environment in which children grow up influences the rest of their life. The family dynamic, particularly parental behavior, impacts their perspective about themselves, others, and the Lord. In today’s reading, for example, consider King Asa v9-15, a man in the royal line, who followed in David’s footsteps and pleased God. Now compare his story with that of Nadab, who provoked God’s anger by practicing the same evils as his father, King Jeroboam v1-4.

With those men in mind, we must consider what will become of our children if they follow in our ways. We are typically their first example of godly and ungodly living. The question here is who do your family members see or think of when they look up to you as their first example in this corrupt world. This means that they should see us fellowshipping with God and His people, praying, reading God’s Word, walking in the Spirit, and bearing fruit that will last. Our families should see us turning to the Lord for direction, strength, providence, protection, and comfort whenever a problem or decision confronts us. Children should see us as their parents serving God and fulfilling divine purpose even in a corrupt system, standing firm and not compromising but always following in the footsteps of Jesus Christ our first example 1 Peter 2:21.

Therefore, it is important for our children to always know by our actions and speech that Jesus Christ is valued above all else in our lives; for He is our Lord and Savior John 3:16.

PRAYER

Lord, uphold my steps in Your paths, that I may not slip. Mold me into a godly example to my family and others. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
