Motives of the Heart

“They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.” — Mark 12:44

In today’s Scripture, Jesus’s actions and words confirm to us that nothing can be hidden from him; even our thoughts and motives; Jeremiah 17:10 “I the LORD search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve.” Jesus did a heart check as he watched people bring their offerings to the temple. He knew who was being stingy and who was being generous. And he explained how the gift of the poor widow was a true act of worship.

It can be tempting for church councils to focus too much on pleasing major donors, whose money can yield power and influence. It’s often the wealthy who are sought out for leadership roles and coveted as friends. Even in the body of Christ, money talks.

Jesus wants us to know that God is concerned with the motives of the heart.

Proverbs 21:2 “Every man's way is right in his own eyes, But the LORD weighs the hearts.” 1 Samuel 16:7 “But the LORD said to Samuel, Do, not look at his appearance or the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” Therefore, let’s strive always to keep our conscience clear before God and man Acts 24:16. And rather than looking past those who seem to be least among us, we need to ask Jesus for his eyes to see one another’s incredible value and to learn from each other. Sometimes less is more!

PRAYER

Lord, help me to have clear motives that will please you and see the value of people as you do. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
