CASNFCI SCRIPTURE & PRAYER FOR THE DAY

More than ink on a page:

The word of God is alive and active… It penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow. —Hebrews 4:12

The Greek word translated as "sword" is machaira, often used generically for a "sword" or "dagger" in the New Testament. A fisherman's machaira was primarily meant for cutting flesh unlike military "swords" which were tougher but less razor-sharp. Whether military "sword" or meat cutter's "knife," this perspective makes the metaphor of this verse all the more vivid. The "sword" is said to separate the "joints and marrow," probably a reference to tendons, ligaments, and other meaty parts. These tissues are hidden away, hard to reach, and seemingly indistinguishable. A sharp blade, such as a machaira, can uncover and separate these things. In the same way, our verse for today states that the Word of God is not only alive; it is also active and powerful even to separate spiritual things which seem completely intertwined. God's Word can distinguish between the godly and ungodly. This incredible "cutting" power of Scripture is therefore a tool to separate our very thoughts into good and evil. God’s words can change and transform us, cut through our defenses and address the deepest issues of our hearts. The words of the Bible are unlike any other words. They are God’s Word to us, and much more than simply ink on a page. God’s Word is living because it is God’s breath 2 Timothy 3:16. In Isaiah 55:11 God says, “My word … will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. Jesus himself is God’s Word, in human flesh John1:1, 14, 6:63. And he said, “The words I have spoken to you they are full of the Spirit and life”.

PRAYER

Lord, thank you for your Word. As we meditate upon your words, shape us into the people you want us to be. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
