Let’s Pray together

They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers. — Acts 1:14.

Jesus has ascended to heaven, and a waiting period for his followers has begun. On the day he ascended, Jesus said, “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised” (Acts 1:4). They would have remembered that this gift would be the power and presence of God’s Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8), but Jesus didn’t say when the Spirit would come. So, what were they to do while waiting?

A lot of action transpires in the book of Acts, but one of the first recorded actions of these believers after Jesus’ ascension is that they join together in prayer. Now, compare that to your friend as the only person praying for you. Of course, you appreciate your friend’s prayers, but what if you had the opportunity to have others pray for you; maybe 10 or even 20 or more? When churches or a large or small group of believers are all of one accord and have “all things in common,” they can be praying for the same things and the same purposes. Those purposes include God being glorified, souls being saved, and the church sharing the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ with the lost. It makes me feel good to know that I’m on a church’s prayer list. To know that other believers are praying for you or me gives me peace of mind. Of course, we must pray for them too as we’re supposed to pray for one another, love one another, and build up one another.

When we gather with other believers to pray, we can “encourage one another and build one another up” (1 Thessalonians 5:11).

PRAYER

Lord, bring us together in prayer for the needs of others and the church, seeking your will. In Jesus’ name Amen.
