Led by the Holy Spirit

“Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts… This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many … And a sword will pierce your soul too.” — Luke 2:27,34-35

Today we often hear the words ‘led by the Holy Spirit among the Christian circle. People do some weird things and attribute it to the work of the Holy Spirit. Many have lost faith in those words: I was led by the Holy Spirit to do this or wear this dress, to take this bus, to eat this food and to buy this, and so on. Today’s Scripture speaks about how Simeon was led by the Holy Spirit.

Mary and Joseph had brought Jesus to the temple to present him to the Lord for circumcision, according to custom. That’s when they met Simeon. Recognizing Jesus as the Messiah, he took the child in his arms and blessed God. This was the child he had been waiting for, the child God himself had promised Simeon he would see before he died. Yes! Simeon was at the right place at the right time to be in on what God was doing. After a lifetime of waiting for the Messiah, one can hardly imagine the joy he experienced. Think of it, a man who knew God’s plan now held the Messiah in his arms! How did this happen? We’re told Simeon was righteous and devoted, a man of faith, and led by the Holy Spirit v25. We do not know how long Simeon waited, we do not know how many would have discouraged him from waiting, but one thing established here is that Simeon trusted the Words of God and submitted to the leading of the Holy Spirit. Of course, depending on the leading of the Holy Spirit means trusting God more than trusting ourselves.

Like Simeon, let’s trust the Words of God and submit to the leading of the Holy Spirit.

PRAYER

Lord, thank you for your presence with us through the Holy Spirit. Help me trust in your leading by your Spirit. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
