Laughter of disbelief

Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I have a child, now that I am old?’ Is anything too hard for the Lord? …. — Genesis 18:13-15

Ninety-year-old Sarah laughed in disbelief when she was told she would give birth to a son. She knew that after a certain age, women simply do not get pregnant. The idea must have sounded like a joke. Abraham had also laughed earlier when God told him Sarah would have a son Genesis 17:16-17. I see that God’s question applies to our lives. why did we laugh? Yes! Our motives for why we laugh matter just like Sarah and Abraham. God knows the very thoughts and intentions of our hearts. When the Lord said, “Why did Sarah laugh?” she denied it and said, “I didn’t laugh.” But the Lord knew differently and said, “No, but you did laugh. The issue at hand wasn’t a laughing matter to the Lord. The problem was that Sarah’s laughter reflected her unbelief in the promise of God. Unbelief is a sin. To doubt God’s promise is equivalent to calling God a liar. It is to say that I know better than the eternal Creator. It is to demote God from His place of sovereign power and to promote myself over Him. God doesn’t take kindly to unbelief.

“Is anything too difficult for the Lord?” The Lord’s word to Sarah speaks to all of us who struggle daily with unbelief. Whatever we do, whether in word or deed, do it all for the glory of God Colossians 3:17. Yes! It matters when we laugh.

PRAYER

Lord, thank you for the laughter. Help us not to give in to unbelief but faith in your promises. Fill us with rejoicing. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
