Jesus says so
Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” — Luke 5:5
The most powerful test of obedience is to do those things that don't make sense simply because Jesus says so. Like the headlights shine on a car driven at night helping us to see ahead, but only for a short distance, so is our perspective limited on things as humans. Not so with Jesus' perspective. Jesus sees the whole road. Where we've been, where we are now, and where we are going.
Notice two things here firstly Peter didn’t argue with Jesus, he simply obeyed. As a professional fisherman, he may well have thought, “Lord, who are you to tell me how to fish?” But he didn’t argue; he just obeyed. Secondly, he didn’t listen to his feelings. No doubt, he was tired from working all night. But he didn’t ask, “What’s the use? Why should I keep on going?” Instead of being led by his feelings, he exercised faith in the words of Christ and the results were amazing v6.
Many people want to do something really big for God; the glamorous and attention-getting jobs, but are unfortunately not obeying God where they are the menial and behind the scene tasks. Until we are obedient to the little things God put before us, he can't use us in the big things of life. The truth is that if we are not making a difference for God where we are then in all likelihood, we will not make a difference for God wherever we are. Therefore, let's cooperate with God’s plan even if it looks foolish.
PRAYER
Lord, develop a humble heart in me that will yield to your instructions at all times so that I can live a fruitful life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
