CASNFCI SCRIPTURE & PRAYER FOR THE DAY

Jesus’ Breath:

[Jesus] breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”— John 20:22.

On our own, we don’t have what it takes to seek and save the lost. If we’re going to pick up the baton of Jesus’ mission, we’re going to need the power of the Holy Spirit! Through a divine wind, breath, and Holy Spirit, God gives himself to his people. He’s not distant, he’s within us, alongside us. This is something that runs throughout the Bible – God’s breath, Spirit, yes, but also the Shekinah glory in the Temple and the incarnation of Jesus himself; Emmanuel, God with us, as Matthew put it. The point is clear God is with us. In so many ways, he’s with us. And so, Jesus breathing on the disciples isn’t a weird thing to do. It’s a promise of something amazing still to come, a confirmation that God will always be with them and, by extension, always with us. It’s a quiet moment in John’s gospel, but its implications are immense: After the Holy Spirit was poured out on the Day of Pentecost (fifty days after Passover), the disciples were never the same again; Acts 2:1-4. They taught and served with a new power that was irresistible. (Acts 2:47). That same provision of power is available to us as we trust in Christ and remain in his love John 15:5, 9-10.

PRAYER

Lord, remind us often of our mission. May our lives and words be a light that shows others the way, for your glory. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
