CASNFCI SCRIPTURE & PRAYER FOR THE DAY

Family! Family! Family!

He looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, “Here are my mother and my brothers!”Mark 3:34

We often talk about the Church being a Family. In today’s Bible reading, we find Jesus’ teaching about family. This helps us to know that he did not only come to establish His kingdom but also established a new family. His is a family characterized by obedience to the revealed will of God. The point of Jesus here was not to dismiss the importance of his biological relatives but to show that the connection with fellow believers was vitally important. God’s call upon us is a wider network of families from different tribes, people, and nations: Matthew 28:19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit ….

Families are meant to be there for each other. I love my family, and the people in my family are very special to me. God gives us parents to take care of us, and brothers and sisters for companionship. He gives us aunts and uncles and grandparents and cousins. But families are never perfect. We might fight from time to time, and sometimes we don’t love each other the way that we could or should. We are human, and our earthly families won’t always be what we might hope. Yes! And if that is true of human families, how much more so is that meant to be true of the Family of God? When we love and support one another, seeking to do God’s will and work together, we follow Jesus’ example of cherishing God’s family. God’s Family is not just about being related by blood, but being related by the blood of Jesus. And because we are part of that family, we are brothers and sisters to one another! We are united through the bond of Christ, and He wants us to love one another. What a beautiful blessing.

PRAYER

Lord, develop in us a loving heart as you desire that we may accept others who have also believed as one family. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
