CASNFCI SCRIPTURE & PRAYER FOR THE DAY

Distinguished by The Spirit

Now Daniel so distinguished himself among the administrators and …. They could find no corruption in him because he was trustworthy …— Daniel 6:3-4

As a Jewish exile in Persia, Daniel’s faithfulness to his office demonstrates that God cares about the everyday issues of governance in a society. A lesson for every Christian worker. Daniel’s former peers didn’t like that. In their jealousy, they began to look for grounds to bring charges against him in his conduct of government affairs. But “they could find no corruption” in his character or conduct. Daniel's rivals contrived a plan that exploited King Darius's ego. They convinced the king to decree that for the next 30 days, no one could pray to any god or man other than the King. The penalty was death in the lion’s den. This offers another lesson for us; beware of flattery. Darius, addled by flattery, neglected to consult his legal counsel about the decree before enacting it, leading to a situation he deeply regretted later. Let’s not forsake godly counsel.

Daniel was not without weakness, but he had a source of strength that kept him from yielding to temptation. In verse 3 of our reading for today, Daniel is described as having “exceptional qualities.” A more literal translation of this phrase shows that “an excellent spirit was in him.” That spirit, of course, was the Spirit of God dwelling in Daniel empowering and enabling him to act in righteous and trustworthy ways, even when the consequences meant he would face a den of hungry lions. Just like Daniel the Spirit of God dwells in us to empower us with the truth and to make us courageous to do the right thing, even when wrong is all around us; 2 Timothy 1:7 “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love, and self-discipline.”

PRAYER

Lord, thank you for empowering us with your Spirit. Cultivate in us the right mind to live trustworthy lives for you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
