A Humble Heart

Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to Jesus with her sons and, kneeling, asked a favor of him… “Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom. — Matthew 20:20-21

The family of Zebedee had a plan. Jesus was gaining a reputation. Word was getting around about his miracles and teachings. The Zebedee brothers, James and John, had been among the first to follow Jesus, and now they wanted to make sure they would have top positions in Jesus’ kingdom. But Jesus was not impressed v22-24.

People spend a lot of energy seeking to establish themselves, trying to prove their worth, and seeking the best possible benefits and rewards. But Jesus teaches a very different understanding of greatness and power. True greatness takes on the form of a servant, submitting to the will of God through Jesus’ death and resurrection v25-28.

This way of life will most likely not get you noticed. Neither will it make you first in people’s minds.

Micah 6:8 “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God”.

A life living under the Holy Spirit leadership is a life that will always hunger for justice, loving mercy, and walking humbly with God. This is the life-giving power of the gospel.

PRAYER

Lord, may our lives reflect your love, so that we may service humanity with a humble heart filled with joy and peace. In Jesus’ name Amen.
