God created man in his image …male and female he created them. —Genesis 1:27

The question of Origin has always confronted us, humans. The blueprint for Genesis chapter 1 is God speaking His intent, then creating. In the previous verse, God decreed what should be made and why v26. Now in this verse, He makes the first of all human beings. The verse is written with a poetic structure of three lines. God creates man in his image. In the image of God, he created them. Male and female he created them. One meaning of being created in the image of God is mankind's unique capacity for moral and rational awareness. God made humans inherently different from animals. We share with Him the experience of personality, will, reason, Etc. These attributes allow us to relate to God in ways other created beings cannot. Another meaning is that humans were meant to stand as the image of God's authority on the earth as we rule over and subdue the rest of His creation v28. The account of the Fall in Genesis 3 showed us how sin shattered the righteousness and holiness in which we were first made to bear God’s image; but God sent his Son, Jesus Christ, to redeem mankind and restore the image of God “in true righteousness and holiness” Eph. 4:24. Yes! this is the truth we believe about our origin as CHRISTIANS.

We cannot understand ourselves apart from God. When we equip ourselves with this truth as the Scripture reveals, we will not give in to the conflict of man’s origin in the world rather we will stay focused and determined to fulfill our call to serve as God’s representatives on this planet, unfolding the amazing work of redemption as designed by God Matthew 5:13-16. Therefore, let us not be intimidated by any modern efforts to confuse or merge human philosophy with divine revelation.

Lord, thank you for giving me an identity and self-worth. May this truth always spur me to live for your glory. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
