Confronted with the Truth

Nathan said to David, “You are the man!”— 2 Samuel 12:7

Nathan the prophet came to King David with God’s message of rebuke. He was probably nervous about how the powerful king would respond. God gave Nathan the wisdom on how to address the sin of David with an effort to help him understand the situation from another point of view. Nathan helped David to empathize with the person he had wronged v1-6.

When we confront someone, it needs to be done with the right attitude. Ephesians 4:15 says, “Speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.” Love is the driving force that helps us call out bad behavior. Yes! We speak the truth so that we do not become part of the problem but the solution for God’s glory.

King David did not try to defend his sinful behavior; instead, he responded in penitence. His heart was softened to hear what he needed to hear. May we also hear God’s Word and respond in love to Christian mentors who guide us to follow Jesus more closely. 2 Corinthians 7:10 Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.

PRAYER

Lord, help us to care for each other enough to lovingly confront wrong behavior even when it is difficult. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
