Children! Children! Children!

Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth. — Psalm 127:4

Parents are fun of giving their children pet names for reasons best known to them. But have you ever heard of children compared to arrows, as in Psalm 127?

In many ways children are like arrows in the hand of a warrior: They must be carefully shaped and formed. They must be guided with skill and strength. They must be given care or they will not fly straight. They must be aimed and given direction; they will not find direction on their own. They are, in some respects, only launched once. They are an extension of the warrior’s strength and accomplishment. They have the potential for much good or evil.

This Psalm gives us a wake-up call in the way that we raise our children. We must have an urgency in training them to use their energy, time, talents, and gifts to do what is right and to live by the ways of the Lord, who “builds the house” Psalm 127:1; that can refer to our household of family members as well as to the household of faith (i.e., the Lord’s church).

We need to pray often for our children, knowing that even while we are sleeping v2 God keeps working in them through his Spirit, refining them for service in his kingdom.

How blessed we are that God has entrusted children to our care.

PRAYER

Lord, equip us to train up children in the way they should go, for your sake, from one generation to the next. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
