CASNFCI SCRIPTURE & PRAYER FOR THE DAY

Believe in God

Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and … they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?” God said to Moses, “I am who I am. … —Exodus 3:14

People can say they believe in God, that sounds like good news. But here’s the problem: the word god is generic. therefore, that doesn’t mean they believe in the one true God. Moses understood that He had fled from Egypt and its world of multiple deities. God's chosen people were living with Egyptians who were the most polytheistic race of the olden days. The people of Israel had become addicted to these gods. Therefore, Moses asked God, "Which God shall I tell them sent me?" What is Your name? And God introduced himself by saying his name is Yahweh (“I AM WHO I AM”). That sounds rather puzzling, doesn’t it? Some say it’s a name best pondered by philosophers and theologians. But actually, God’s name isn’t so mysterious. “I AM WHO I AM” is a name that describes the way God operates with his people in ordinary life. It tells us that God is who he claims to be. He’s not changeable. Rather, God is faithful.

The Pharisees were accusing Jesus of blasphemy because He was forgiving sins. Only God can forgive sins. Their complaint was who are you to do only what God can do? In response to their accusations Jesus said, "Before Abraham was born, I AM" John 8:58. They knew exactly what He meant. There wasn't any question in their minds because they picked up stones to stone Him to death v59. On another occasion, Jesus said, "I and the Father are one." The response: "The Jews picked up stones again to stone Him" John 10:30-31. Jesus used the "I am" formula to communicate the essential attributes of the LORD God all through the New Testament; John 6:35, 8:12, 10:9, 10:11, 11:25-26, Etc.

Our Savior is God's last word to man. When we reject Jesus Christ, we reject the only one and true God and Savior. We need to understand this truth about our God. Yes! This is primary.

PRAYER

Lord, we have so often been hurt because we lack understanding of who you are to us. Help us to always trust you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
